Description

Tipton Street Methodist Chapel and Sunday School is a Primitive Methodist chapel built in 1857, with a Sunday school added in 1881. The building is constructed of Flemish bond red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof with stone-coped gable ends and a brick dentil eaves cornice. The chapel has a rectangular plan with the entrance located at the southwest end beneath a gallery.

The exterior is a single storey with a symmetrical three-bay southwest front, which includes giant pilasters with stone capitals, a brick dentil cornice, and a wide shaped gable featuring a moulded stone roundel. The central bay is wider and has a stuccoed portico supported by Tuscan columns, an entablature, and a tablet above. The outer bays contain large round-arch windows with stone architraves and keystones. The southeast return has three windows and pilasters, while the northwest return also has three bays but features plain pilasters and plain round-arch windows. The windows are iron-frame with leaded panes and stained glass at the top.

At the northeast end, the Sunday school is a lower and shorter brick range with iron-frame round-arch windows. Inside, there is a gallery supported by slender columns with a panelled front, and the pews appear to be intact.
