Description
Eriswell War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920. It is situated just outside the parish churchyard, to the south-east of the Church of St Lawrence, which is also listed as Grade II*.
The memorial is made of grey granite and features a wheel-head cross with a tapering four-sided shaft. On the east face of the cross-head and upper part of the shaft, there is a carved relief of an inverted Sword of Sacrifice, adorned with trefoils at the pommel and ends of the cross-guard. The shaft rises from a rough-hewn, tapering plinth that has four sides and sits on a single-stepped base.
The dedication is inscribed in leaded lettering within a smooth, inset panel on the east face of the plinth. It reads: "ERECTED BY THE PARISH OF ERISWELL IN MEMORY OF (8 NAMES) WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914–1919."
The memorial is surrounded by a square area of gravel, which is bordered by stone kerbs. This area is enclosed by nine posts connected by chains, with an opening on the east side for access to the memorial.
