Description

Eriswell Hall is a building that consists of two houses, originally serving as a manor house and a farmhouse. It has a core that dates from the 15th century or early 16th century, with significant alterations made during various periods. The hall range is located to the right and features an original cross-wing. The building is two storeys high and is primarily timber-framed; the upper part of the cross-wing is rendered and jettied at the first-floor level, while other sections have been encased and rebuilt in mid-19th century red brick. The roofs are pantiled and have external chimneys made of gault brick. Most of the windows are mid-19th century sash windows, with two splayed bays on the ground floor. The entrance door, which is from the 19th century, is panelled with the upper half glazed and bordered with panes. There is an open porch supported by timber posts, topped with a hipped pantiled roof. Inside, there is a well-crafted but altered early 18th-century staircase featuring moulded handrails and turned balusters. To the left, there is a service wing that was added in the late 16th or early 17th century; it is also timber-framed and rendered, with the ground floor walling underbuilt in painted brick. This wing has horizontally sliding early 19th-century casements, and the entire roof was almost completely rebuilt in the 18th century.
