Description
The Old Rectory is a Grade II listed building that consists of three houses, originally serving as a rectory. It dates back to the 16th century and has undergone significant alterations during various periods, including a major remodelling around 1900. The building features a hall range on the right with an original cross-wing and later extensions on the left. It is primarily timber framed, with much of it encased and under-built in rendered masonry.
The cross-wing showcases a jettied upper floor supported by exposed joist ends on carved brackets, along with false half-timbering added around 1900. The roof is plaintiled, adorned with bands of fishscale tiles and crested ridge tiles, and features prominent 19th-century dormers that have false half-timbered gables and moulded wooden finials. The windows are paired 19th-century mullioned and transomed designs, and there is a slate-roofed splayed bay on the right. The entrance doors are half-glazed and date from the 20th century.
Inside the cross-wing, a moulded beam on the first floor and other framing elements are exposed. The cross-wing was extended to the rear by two bays in the late 16th or early 17th century. At the back, there is a small staircase wing that contains a notable late 17th-century staircase, featuring moulded handrails, newels topped with acorn finials, and turned balusters. The extensions on the left are mainly from the late 19th century, although they may have an earlier core.
