Description
The Northrepps War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with later additions. It has a square plan and features a grey granite wheel cross on an elongated tapered plinth with a single-stepped base. The polished-granite plinth displays an inscription on its front (east) side that reads: ‘THIS CROSS IS ERECTED / IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919 / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE / ECCLUS XLIV 14’. The names of 23 fallen soldiers are inscribed on the north and south sides of the plinth, with 12 names on the north and 11 on the south. Additionally, seven names of those who fell in the Second World War were later added to the west side of the plinth. The memorial is surrounded by kerbstones and is marked by eight cast-iron posts linked by metal chains. It is prominently located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is listed at Grade I, approximately 8 meters northeast of the church's north door.
