Description

COVENTRY SP3 7NW STONEY ROAD GARDENS 833/17/10127 Summerhouse on Plot 13

GV II

Summerhouse. Circa 1900. Timber-framed with plastered wattle-and-daub panels. Clay tile roof with bands of scalloped tiles and with crested ridge tiles; gable ends with wavey bargeboards and finial. Brick gable-end stack with louvred clay pot. Small single-cell rectangular plan building with entrance at one end and fireplace at the other end. Single storey. Symmetrical gabled front with central doorway with panelled and glazed door and windows to left and right with leaded panes. INTERIOR: Matchboarded walls. NOTE: Stoney Road Gardens [also known as Park Gardens] was a group of small pleasure gardens laid out for owners of town houses in Coventry that did not have gardens. They were created soon after 1853 and by 1887 the northern half of the site had been laid out as small gardens enclosed by hedges and divided by tracks and walks. Only eight of the summerhouses remain. SOURCE: Lambert, D. Study of Detached Town Gardens commissioned by English Heritage, 1994.
