Description

Coventry Station, built in 1962, is a main line station designed by architect W R Headley, with project architect Derrick Shorten. The booking hall features a reinforced concrete frame, while the station platforms are supported by a steel frame. The building includes anodised aluminium windows and doors, complemented by blue engineering brick panels at the lower levels.

The station consists of a two-storey booking hall connected to an island platform and a single-sided platform via an overbridge. Each platform is covered by long steel-framed canopies with deep fascias that protect the single-storey platform buildings. The wide overbridge features staircases and lifts for platform access. The booking office is glazed on three sides, and the roof of the hall extends outwards, connecting to the overbridge roof with a continuous fascia. Station signage is integrated into panels at door head height.

The concrete columns of the booking hall and overbridge are adorned with vertical glazed tiling in white, matching the wall above the enclosed ticket office. The ceiling of the booking hall and the undersides of all platform canopies are finished with varnished hardwood strip boarding. A small courtyard is situated next to the catering facilities and the main waiting room. Additionally, a single-storey canopy surrounds the booking hall, providing shelter for bus, car, and taxi drop-off and pick-up points.

The station is noted for its outstanding architectural design, particularly its spatial qualities and detailing.
