Description
The Ladywood West Tunnel Portal, built in 1846-47 by Robert Stephenson, is a significant semi-circular tunnel entrance featuring concave reveals, ashlar voussoirs, and a stepped keystone at the top. It is framed broadly with rusticated quoins against engineering brickwork and topped with a block bracketed cornice and a pediment blocking course. The portal projects from an engineering brick retaining wall that curves out to down-curving quadrant abutments. This tunnel provides access to New Street and was constructed as part of the Stour Valley Railway's line to Wolverhampton.
