Description
The Roving Bridge over the Birmingham Wolverhampton line, located immediately west of Fazeley Junction, dates back to 1827 and was constructed by Horseley Ironworks of Tipton. This bridge is notable for its nearly flat span made from two single cast iron pieces, featuring pierced X-pattern parapets. The deck panels are bolted into the lower flanges. It stands on ashlar footings supported by brick abutments laid in a swept English bond, with double ramped approaches. This type of roving bridge is associated with the Birmingham Canal Navigation and is contemporary with Thomas Telford's improvements.
