Description
This is a pair of two-story villas, numbers 111 to 117 Gough Road, dating from the 1850s. They were designed as narrowly detached properties and are linked by low screen passage walls. The villas are built of red brick with Italianate stucco detailing, and are symmetrical in their three-bay frontages. They feature a Greek key decorative band and frieze. The roofs are slate, with low gable ends, flat boxed eaves, and stepped parapet coping. A dormer has been inserted into the roof of number 115 as a later modification. The windows are set within plain stucco frames with bracketed cornices on the ground floor and moulded cornices with small acroteria and panelled aprons on the first floor. The window in the right-hand bay on the first floor is tripartite. The central first-floor window is emphasized by a surround that rests on a course aligned with the doorway, featuring a slight break and an anthemion crest. The doorways are flanked by quarter and full-width pilasters, panelled reveals, double-panelled doors, a rectangular fanlight, and a deep entablature with a bracketed cornice. The stepped gable ends have triple groups of arched geometric leaded lights, extending through two floors and illuminating the staircases. This presents group value as a well-preserved example of mid-19th century villa architecture.
