Description

Moat House, located at No 24 Lichfield Road, was built around 1680 by Sir William Wilson for his own use, although he was still living at Langley Hall in 1683. The house is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features an old tiled roof with stone-coped gables on the side elevations. The front has a balustraded parapet with a central round-arched panel set under an archivolt, supported by Doric pilasters and columns. The building is two storeys high, with a basement and attics, and includes five sash windows with glazing bars and cornices on Doric pilasters. Corinthian angle pilasters and a pair at the center support an entablature. The central doorway features a bolection-moulded archivolt with a keystone, a fanlight, half columns, and a six-fielded panelled door. There are two panelled chimney stacks. The back of the house has two oval dormers, a gabled projection at the center, and a later ground floor bow on the right. A 19th-century two-storey, one-window wing is present on the north side. Inside, the house retains early panelling and chimneypieces, as well as a staircase with turned balusters and a moulded handrail on an open string well. Moat House forms a group with No 26.
