Description
Bell's Farmhouse is a substantial farmhouse dating from the late 16th century to the mid 17th century. It stands two storeys high with an attic and features a timber frame with red brick infill, which has later been roughcast. The building has double gabled fronts and rear, with the gables slightly jettied at the attic level, and is topped with an old tile roof. Original external chimney stacks are located on the side elevations, featuring tall coupled stair-shaped shafts. The windows are mainly 19th-century wood casements.
The central doorway leads into an axial passage, with the door framed in an architrave, although the hood is missing. Inside, the main rooms retain 17th-century panelling, although some of it appears to have been reset. The ground floor right-hand room showcases a palmette frieze, while the upper right-hand room contains remnants of a 17th-century plaster ceiling divided into two compartments, one decorated with a rosette and guilloche, and the other featuring an original design with lions' masks. A dog leg staircase retains elements of splat balusters. Additionally, the site of the house was moated to the west.
