Description

The Kings Norton Guillotine Stop Lock, located east of the junction of the Stratford on Avon Canal with the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, dates from around 1794 to 1802. It features a brick-lined, stone-dressed stop lock with a cast iron guillotine gate framework. The guillotine gate operates using a winched counterweight chain mechanism, which runs within a slightly raked cast iron girder frame. The chain passes through a block on the gate and up over two wheels on one side, leading down to a winch. On the opposite side, the chain runs over a wheel supported by an elegant cast iron column before descending with the counterweight into a post.
