Description
The west portal of Brandwood Tunnel, located on the Stratford on Avon Canal, dates from around 1793-1794, with the north section of the canal opening in 1802. It is situated below the north side of Shelfield Road (B14). The portal features a lofty retaining wall that is faced with ashlar stone and has swept out abutments. The entrance has a voussoir elliptical arch that is wide enough to allow the passage of two narrow boats, although there is no towpath. Above the arch, there is a circular plaque that contains an eroded bust of Shakespeare, flanked by two niches.
