Description
The East Portal of Brandwood Tunnel is a tunnel portal built between 1793 and 1796, with later repairs, and is probably designed by the engineer Josiah Clowes. It features a symmetrical elevation treated in a classical style, with a curved brick retaining wall and wings that include a brick band and copings. The portal has a single elliptical arch with a stone keystone. Above the arch, there is a large square stone tablet supported by console brackets, which features a central, moulded rectangular shield with chamfered corners, flanked by pilasters. On either side of the tablet, there are single round-arched blind windows with stone keystones and lintels, which are followed by single flat-arched blind windows, also with stone keystones and lintels, flanked by plain brick pilasters.
