Description
Edgbaston Golf Club, formerly known as Edgbaston Hall, is a central block that was rebuilt in 1717 by Sir Richard Gough after an earlier structure was destroyed in 1688. The building is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof. It stands two and a half storeys tall with five bays and quoins. The ground floor includes a central closed porch supported by Tuscan columns, topped with elaborate brickwork. The windows are sash style, with tall and narrow ones on the ground and first floors, and square ones in the attic, all adorned with stone heads and keystones. The building has an elaborate brickwork parapet and two rainwater heads displaying the Gough arms. Inside, there is a contemporary staircase featuring twisted balusters and Corinthian columns as newel posts, along with good panelling and doors that retain their original brass furniture. At the rear, there are 19th-century additions, including a two-storey section with a large canted bay window on the left-hand side and a three-storey section on the right. To the right of the main block is another two-storey wing with four bays, two bays deep, and without quoins at the corners. Additionally, there are fine 18th-century wrought-iron gates at the rear of the house. Notably, William Withering died in this home in 1799.
