Description
Nos 1-7 on Corporation Street is a commercial building dating from around 1880. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a slate mansard roof. The design showcases a free style composition that incorporates a mix of Hispanic and Elizabethan details. The building has five storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical arrangement of five windows.
A moulded cornice sits above 20th-century shop fronts, with a central doorway that has a bracketed broken-pediment above a panelled door set within a semi-circular arched architrave. The tympanum features a richly carved panel with festooned swan-necked pediments on either side. The first-floor window projects and is flanked by carved festoons beneath a balustraded parapet, while the second-floor window has columns with foliate capitals supporting a swan-necked pediment.
Both the first and second floors include rounded projecting bay windows adorned with carved details on their pediments, as well as stone-transomed windows with fluted Ionic pilasters and broad mullions. The third floor features stone-mullioned and transomed cross windows, which have bracketed swan-necked pediments flanking a central triangular pediment. Below these windows is a richly carved bracketed cornice. The dormer windows are topped with bracketed pediments, with a central dormer that has a segmental-pedimented tablet set in a broken pediment. This building is noted as a striking early example of Free Style architecture.
