Description
City Arcade is a Grade II* listed building constructed between 1898 and 1901 by architects T.W.F. Newton and Cheattle, featuring decorative terracotta and green faience by Doulton and Co, with additional detailing by W.J. Neatby. The gabled facade facing Union Street has three storeys plus an attic and is set diagonally to the arcade. It features a large central arch flanked by polygonal turrets that end in small cupolas with windows and scrolly buttresses. To the left, there is another single bay. The ground floor has modern shop fronts. The windows are designed with mullions and transoms, with the first floor featuring windows with two transoms and the second floor with one. Above the arch, there is a row of five small windows and an impressive band of sculpture that includes caryatid figures and a three-light window in the gable. Inside the arcade, there are modern shop fronts on either side, beneath a beautiful scrolly green faience balustrade with intermittent cupolas, and lengths of coffered ceiling at both ends. The facade facing Union Passage is more utilitarian.
