Description
Newton Chambers, located on Cannon Street, was built around 1899 by Essex, Goodman and Nicol. The building is constructed of pink terracotta with a slate roof, and stands four storeys high plus an attic, comprising five bays. The fifth bay is wider, housing the main entrance and corner feature with a small cupola. The ground floor now contains modern shop fronts, while the entrance features a fanlight made up of four glazed sections. The first floor has four tripartite windows set beneath broad segmental arches. Decorative features include detached scrollwork members, ball flower ornament, and a decorated stringcourse above the first-floor windows. The second and third floors each have four tripartite windows with a “ause-de-panier” arch to each light, connected by baluster-like shafts on either side. The fifth bay on the second and third floors features a four-light transomed window with “ause-de-panier” arches; these are combined to form a shallow bay window topped with a round window. A moulded eaves cornice runs around the building. The attic has four terracotta-faced, timber-sided canted bay windows. The return frontage to New Street, where entrances to numbers 41, 42, and 42A New Street are located, is treated similarly to the Cannon Street elevation, but the central gable is distinct, featuring canted bay windows on the second and third floors and two-light rather than tripartite windows. The building was formerly home to the Kardomah Cafe, and some of its interior is believed to remain behind the current fittings.
