Description
The Midland Bank International Division, built between 1867 and 1869 by Edward Holmes, is a Grade II listed building located at 128 New Street in the City Centre. It was extended towards Stephenson Place and Stephenson Street in 1875. The building is constructed of stone and consists of two storeys with three bays. The ground floor features banded rustication and a central arched entrance set within a porch supported by coupled granite Ionic columns. This porch leads to a balcony and two arched windows. The first floor is adorned with a coupled giant Corinthian order and includes three windows framed by pilasters and an entablature. The entablature is detailed with a dentilled and bracketed cornice, and there is a balustraded parapet on top. The building has a long return on Stephenson Place that follows a similar style, although the first floor order is not coupled. Good iron railings complement the exterior. Inside, the banking hall features three by seven arched bays separated by giant composite Corinthianesque pilasters, which support a heavily coffered roof with a central coved glazed part.
