Description
Nos 57 and 59 on Church Street are a pair of buildings constructed in 1909, featuring brick and concrete with a slate roof. They rise three storeys plus a basement and attic, comprising six bays. The outer bays have intermittent even quoins, which are slightly advanced and extend into a fourth storey at the attic level.
On the ground floor, there is a tall narrow sash window with a flat surround, three casement windows, and a door that is set within a moulded surround featuring a cyclopic keystone and cornice, alongside another tall narrow sash window. The building has a prominent entablature.
The first and second floors include outer single sash windows with flat surrounds and severe cornices, as well as two tiers of four large mullioned and transomed casement windows designed to appear as a very tall single window, deeply set back between brick piers that support a stone entablature with a boldly bracketed cornice. Above this, there are four two-light dormer casement windows in the roof, flanked by pedimented windows.
