Description

No. 223, Bristol Road is a two-story, three-bay stucco villa dating from around 1840. It presents a more distinctive design than typical villas of the period, particularly in the treatment of its ground-floor verandah. The house is raised on a terrace with a plinth, and features a ground-floor cornice, overhanging eaves to a hipped slate roof with torched details, and flanking corniced stucco chimneys. Architrave surrounds are present on the first-floor sash windows. The ground floor, sheltered by a verandah, has two rectangular window bays, each containing an eared, architrave-framed, glazing bar sash window that extends downwards to meet the terrace. A modillion bracket cornice runs across the full width of the ground floor, encompassing the window breaks. The central doorway is framed by an eared architrave and flanked by heavy consoles supporting a cornice. The verandah's paired trellis standards feature acanthus leaf decoration to the balusters and has segmental arched openings in front of the windows and door. A central flight of steps leads to the entrance.
