Description
No. 87 Clarendon Street is a hotel built around 1820, with later alterations. It features pinkish-brown brick and painted stucco facades topped with a Welsh slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic beneath a pediment, with three first-floor windows arranged in a central hallway plan.
On the exterior, the ground floor has a central entrance accessed by three roll-edged steps leading to a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars in fielded-panel reveals. The doorcase is adorned with Tuscan pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course. The outer bays of the ground floor contain 8/8 sash windows, all featuring plain reveals, tooled architraves, and sills. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows with blind boxes, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course topped with a central pediment that contains an 8/8 sash window. The roof has two end and ridge stacks with cornices, with the right stack being replaced.
The left return of the building also has two storeys and an attic, with two first-floor windows. There is a full-height canted bay to the right. The first floor features a 6/6 sash window, with the bay containing an 8/8 sash window flanked by two 2/2 sash windows, all supported by fielded pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. The gable has a frieze, cornice, and blocking course with a central pediment that contains a 6/3 fixed-light window. On the ground floor, to the left is a 6/6 sash window, while the bay has 1/1 sashes with pilasters in between, along with a frieze and cornice. Most sashes, except those in the bays, have plain reveals, tooled architraves, and sills.
Inside, the original plasterwork and joinery include a dogleg staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters.
