Description

A terrace of three houses located on Willes Road, built around 1820 and altered subsequently. The houses are constructed of reddish-brown brick with painted stucco frontages, and have Welsh slates on the two houses to the right and cement tiles on the left.

The buildings are three storeys high with basements, and each has six first-floor windows. The basement and ground floor have horizontal rustication. A band separates the ground and first floors. The first floor features six-over-six sash windows, with the four windows to the right having tooled architraves. The second floor has three-over-six sash windows, with the windows numbered two through five also having tooled architraves; all windows are set in plain reveals and have sills.

The ground floor of the left-hand house (number 18) has two roll-edged steps leading to a six-fielded-panel door with an overlight containing glazing-bars, set within fielded-panel reveals. The door is accessed via a solid porch supported by Tuscan pillars, with a stepped frieze, cornice and blocking course. The central houses (numbers 14 and 16) have a pair of entrances, each with five roll-edged steps leading to a five-panel door, the lower panel roll-moulded and partly glazed, with an overlight containing glazing-bars within a solid porch with Tuscan pillars, stepped frieze, cornice and blocking course. To the left of the central entrances is a canted bay with a two-over-two window above a one-over-one sash; the remaining windows are tripartite, with a six-over-six sash between two two-over-two sashes. Basement windows are concealed on the left, with two three-over-six sashes in the centre, and a three-over-six sash and glazed door to the right. The rear of the buildings have some six-over-six sashes.

The interior retains original joinery, including shutters to some windows. Group value derives from their cohesive architectural style and contribution to the streetscape.
