Description

Numbers 4 and 5 are a pair of semi-detached villas built between 1834 and 1838, designed by architect William Thomas. They feature a pinkish-brown brick construction with a painted stucco facade and a Welsh slate roof, complemented by cast-iron porches and verandahs.

The exterior is two storeys high, with a basement and attics in the gables. There are six first-floor windows, with the entrance bays on the left and right set back. The first and sixth windows are narrow, round-arched 2/2 sash windows, while the others are 6/6 sash windows, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrances are accessed by seven steps leading to three-panel doors. The ground floor has 10-pane French windows with margin-lights, and the basement features plate-glass and casement windows with margin-lights. The building is adorned with a frieze, cornice, and a low parapet, along with central ridge and rear stacks. The porches display a delicate scroll motif, and the continuous verandah on the ground floor has a balustrade featuring a heart-and-anthemion motif with scrolls on the uprights.

The interior has not been inspected. There are also screen walls attached to the left and right, abutting Nos. 3 and 6, which provide entrances to the gardens.

Historically, a map from 1834 indicates that Lansdowne Circus and Crescent were laid out for intended building. Lansdowne Circus consists of nearly identical villas, and Numbers 1-17 Lansdowne Circus form an architectural group with Victoria House, along with Numbers 19-57 Lansdowne Crescent, all designed by William Thomas.
