Description

A pair of semi-detached villas with attached walls, built circa 1834-1836, and later altered. The architect was William Thomas. The buildings are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, and have a Welsh slate roof.

The exterior is two storeys high with a basement and attics to the gable. The property has six first-floor windows, with the entrance bays to the left and right set back. On the first floor, there are narrow, round-arched 2/2 sash windows to the left and right, and six/six sashes elsewhere, all in plain reveals and with sills. The entrances are accessed by six steps leading to three-panel, part-glazed doors. There are two four-pane French windows and two 10-pane French windows with margin lights, all with blind boxes. The basement windows consist of eight/eight replacement sashes to the left, and casements to the right. The facade features a frieze, cornice, a low parapet and central ridge and rear stacks. The porches display diamond and oval motifs on the uprights. A continuous verandah runs across the centre, where the ground floor balustrade features a heart-and-anthemion motif, and the uprights have circle, oval and diamond motifs.

The interior of both villas contain staircases with wreathed handrails and rod-with-central-bobbin balusters. Original fireplaces remain, and some windows have shutters.

The property is accompanied by screen walls to the right and left, which abut numbers 11 and 14.

A map from 1938 shows Lansdowne Circus and Crescent laid out for intended buildings. Lansdowne Circus represents an almost complete layout of practically identical villas. Numbers 1 to 17 (consecutive), Lansdowne Circus, form an architectural group with Victoria House, and numbers 19 to 57, Lansdowne Crescent, all designed by William Thomas.
