Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, built circa 1834-1838, with later alterations. The design is attributed to William Thomas. The villas are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, and have Welsh slate roofs with cast-iron porches and verandahs.

The villas are two storeys with basements and attics to the gables, featuring six first-floor windows, with the entrance bays on the left and right set back. The first floor has a narrow, round-arched two-over-two sash window to the left and right, and six-over-six sash windows elsewhere, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrances are reached by ten-paneled steps leading to part-glazed, three-panel doors, with ten-pane French windows with margin lights. Basement windows are two-paneled with margin lights, and a three-over-six sash window is also present. The building features a frieze, cornice, and a low parapet, with central ridge and rear stacks. The porch has delicate scrollwork to the uprights. A continuous verandah runs centrally, with paired rods and anthemion-and-paterae motifs to the uprights.

The interior of No. 15 includes a dogleg staircase with a wreathed handrail, rod-with-central-bobbin balusters, Regency fireplaces, shutters to some windows, and four-panel doors. Screen walls to the left and right abut Nos 13 & 16.

A map from 1834 shows Lansdowne Circus and Crescent laid out for intended buildings. Lansdowne Circus retains a largely complete layout of practically identical villas. Numbers 14-17 (consecutive) on Lansdowne Circus form an architectural group with Victoria House, and Numbers 19-57 (odd) on Lansdowne Crescent, all designed by William Thomas.
