Description
A pair of semi-detached villas and attached walls, dating from approximately 1834 to 1838, designed by William Thomas. The villas are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, and have a Welsh slate roof. They feature cast-iron porches and verandahs.
The villas are two storeys high with a basement and attics to the gables, presenting six first-floor windows, with the outer bays recessed. Each villa has an entrance reached by seven steps, leading to a three-panel door. The ground floor incorporates ten-pane French windows with margin lights. The first floor has narrow, round-arched two-paned sashes in the outer bays, while the remaining windows are six-paned sashes with plain reveals and sills. Basement windows are multi-paned casements. A frieze, cornice, and low parapet run along the top. Chimneys are located on the central ridge and rear. The porches are decorated with a delicate scroll motif. A continuous verandah with a heart-and-anthemion balustrade and diamond, circle, and oval motifs to the uprights extends across the centre bays of the ground floor.
The interior has not been inspected.
Attached screen walls connect the villas to numbers 1 and 4, with openings leading to the garden.
A map from 1834 depicts the layout of Lansdowne Circus and Crescent, intended for building. The Circus retains a largely complete layout of almost identical villas. Numbers 1 to 17 (consecutive) on Lansdowne Circus form an architectural group with Victoria House, and numbers 19 to 57 (odd) on Lansdowne Crescent, all also designed by William Thomas.
