Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, built around 1834 to 1838, with later alterations. The architect was William Thomas. The villas are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade and a Welsh slate roof. They feature cast-iron porches and verandahs.

The villas are two storeys high with a basement and attics, and have six first-floor windows, with the entrance bays to the left and right set back. The first floor has narrow, round-arched 2/2 sash windows on the left and right, while the remaining windows are 6/6 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. The entrances have seven steps leading to 3-panel doors. A central 10-pane French window has margin lights. The basement has casement windows. A frieze, cornice, low parapet, and a roof dormer to the right are present, along with central ridge and rear stacks. The porch has a delicate scroll motif to its uprights. A continuous verandah runs along the ground floor, with an anthemion motif to the balustrade and circles to the uprights. Windows at No.9 have blind boxes.

The interior of No.9 includes a staircase with a wreathed handrail and rod-with-central-bobbin balusters, 4-panel doors, and shutters to some windows.

Subsidiary screen walls to the right and left abut Nos. 7 and 10. A map from 1834 shows Lansdowne Circus and Crescent laid out with intended buildings. The villas, along with Victoria House and Nos. 19-57 (odd) Lansdowne Crescent, form an architectural group.
