Description

A pair of semi-detached villas with attached walls, dating to approximately 1834-1838, designed by William Thomas. The villas are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade, topped by a Welsh slate roof. They feature cast-iron porches and verandahs.

The villas are two storeys high with a basement and attics to the gable, and possess six first-floor windows. The first floor windows are a mix: the first and sixth windows are narrower, round-arched 2/2 sashes. The remaining windows are 6/6 sashes, all set in plain reveals with sills. Access is provided by seven roll-edged steps leading to 3-panel doors. There are also 10-pane French windows with margin-lights in plain reveals. The basement has 8/8 sashes. A frieze, cornice, and a low parapet top the facade, with central ridge and rear stacks. The porches feature a delicate scroll motif. A continuous verandah runs along the centre of the ground floor, exhibiting a heart-and-anthemion motif with scrolls to the uprights.

Inside No.6, a staircase has a wreathed handrail and rod-with-central-bobbin balusters. No.7 features 4-panel doors with shutters to some windows and a similar staircase.

Screen walls flank either side, abutting Nos. 5 and 8.

A map from 1834 depicts the layout of Lansdowne Circus and Crescent, intended for building. Lansdowne Circus retains a near-complete layout of largely identical villas. Nos. 1-17 (consecutive) of Lansdowne Circus form an architectural group with Victoria House, and Nos. 19-57 (odd) of Lansdowne Crescent, all designed by William Thomas.
