Description
Lansdowne House and Aberdeen House are a pair of semi-detached villas, later converted into flats and a house, dating from 1836. Number 81 was designed by William Thomas for his own use. The buildings are constructed of pinkish-brown brick with a painted stucco facade and a Welsh slate roof. They are built in a Neo-Tudor style.
The main three-story, three-bay range is accompanied by a two-story, single-bay range to the left, with basements beneath. Quoins mark the corners. A central projection sits between canted bays which extend from the basements through the ground and first floors. Single-story, projecting porches are situated at the outer bays. A sill band rests on lion corbels on the left-hand range of the first floor, above which sits a mullion and transom window in moulded reveals with a quoined surround. The canted bay contains a central sash with margin-lights flanked by smaller 1/1 sashes in plain reveals with a quoined surround. There are three 1/1 sashes in the final bay, all contained in plain reveals with quoined surrounds, and a pierced diaper pattern balustrade tops the bays. The second floor has three mullion and transom windows set in tooled reveals with quoined surrounds.
The ground floor entrances, which are similar, are approached by two roll-edged steps leading to a part-glazed, three-panel door with a four-centred overlight and margin-lights. The porches have a moulded, four-centred opening, with male caryatid pilasters supporting a frieze decorated with griffins and masks, topped by finials. The windows to the left include a 1/1 sash with margin-lights in tooled reveals and quoins. The canted bay on the ground floor features a central 1/1 sash with margin-lights between two 1/1 sashes in plain reveals with a quoined surround. Two 1/1 sashes are set in tooled reveals with quoined surrounds, and the final bay features three 1/1 sashes. Basement windows are a mix of 1/1 sashes and casements.
The left-hand range is finished with a cornice, frieze, and cornice with lozenge and pyramidal finials. The outer bays of the main range have curvilinear gable ends with tooled surrounds and urns, a gryphon, and a lion at the top. The central bay has a pierced parapet displaying the date and pyramidal finials. Tall end and roof stacks are topped with cornices. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
The buildings form a group with the neighboring properties at Nos. 83, 85, and 87 Holly Walk.
