Description

The County Mental Hospital, built in 1852, is a County Asylum designed by Harris, with additions made in 1871-1872. This large building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a Jacobean style. It is arranged in an E-shape and consists of two and three storeys. The central section projects and has a shaped gable with finials, alongside a clock tower topped with an octagonal stone cupola and a lead ogee dome. The projecting wings also feature shaped gables. The roofs are covered with Welsh slate, and there have been many later additions to the structure.
