Description

A terrace of six houses, now houses and flats, located on Grove Street and Regent Street, was built between 1828 and 1834, with later alterations. The houses are constructed of reddish-brown brick with painted stucco facades, topped with Welsh slate and concealed roofs.

The terrace is two storeys high, except for number 40, which has three storeys, and features sixteen first-floor windows arranged in a pattern of 3:3:3:3:2:2. Stucco detailing includes a continuous first-floor band that ramps upwards from left to right and is surmounted by Tuscan pilasters with a depressed panel between each window and at the ends of each house. Capitals are missing from number 38. Number 40 includes three Ionic pilasters to the upper stage, along with a frieze, cornice, and blocking course. The first floor has 6/6 sash windows throughout, except for the two rightmost windows of number 38, which are 4/4 sashes. The left return (facing Regent Street) has a 6/6 sash window and a blind opening. The second floor of number 40 features 3/6 sashes.

The ground floor entrances vary. On the left return, there are two steps leading to a deeply-recessed four-panel door within a Doric pilastered surround, a frieze, and a cornice. Central entrances with six-panel doors, overlights, and plain reveals are found for the three houses to the left, with numbers 46 and 44 having Doric pilastered surrounds, a frieze with triglyphs, and a cornice. The two houses to the right (numbers 40 and 38) have part-glazed four-panel doors; number 40 additionally has a two-columnar Doric porch with engaged pilasters, a frieze, a cornice, and a blocking course, while number 38 has an overlight and plain reveals.

The windows on the front of the terrace are of varying designs. There is an unequally hung 2/2 sash, followed by a canted bay with a 2/2 sash between 1/1 sashes, then four 6/6 sashes, and finally another canted bay with a 2/2 sash between 1/1 sashes. Two 6/6 sashes are located on the left return (Regent Street). All window openings have plain reveals and sills. A low parapet with copings tops the facade, and tall ridge and roof stacks are present.

The interior of numbers 42 Grove Street and number 5 Regent Street have staircases with stick balusters. Grove Street was laid out in 1828, with the west side and lower part of the east side completed by 1834. Numbers 14-46 (even) Grove Street and number 5 Regent Street form a notable architectural group.
