Description

The Stables and Riding School, located 100 yards northeast of Stoneleigh Abbey, were designed in 1814 by Charles S Smith of Warwick. Built in a neo-Tudor style, the stables are constructed from red sandstone ashlar and feature a D-shaped layout, with the stables forming a half-circle to the north. Along the east-west axis to the south are the coach houses, tack room, feed stores, and grooms' cottages, surrounding an internal cobbled courtyard.

The main entrance is on the west side and consists of a two-storey central section with a four-centre archway, hood mould, and large wooden doors, flanked by single-storey wings on either side. The entrance is accentuated by projecting octagonal angle pilasters with turrets and embattled parapets. Above the central entrance, there is a long square-headed stone mullioned window with six leaded lights and a drip mould above, featuring a central blocked panel with a heraldic crest. The flanking sections each have a square-headed stone mullioned three-light casement with leaded panes and a drip mould above.

Inside, the stable range contains early 19th-century wooden stalls with doors, and rib-vaulted ceilings. The Riding School, added in 1820 by Charles S Smith, is attached to the south of the stables. It is also made of red sandstone ashlar and features an embattled parapet and a low-pitched hipped slate roof. The building has two storeys, with three four-centred arches forming a loggia at the ground floor and three square-headed three-light casements with leaded lights and drip moulds above. An octagonal stair turret at the southwest end of the facade leads to a first-floor balcony inside at the western end.
