Description
South Hurst Farm Cottages, located 90 yards northeast of South Hurst Farmhouse, is a group of three cottages and a stable built around the 17th century. The structure features a timber-framed design with red brick infill panels and has steeply pitched plain tile roofs with gabled ends, hipped at the western end. The layout is T-shaped, with a two-storey cross-wing at the eastern end and a one-storey and attic range at right angles, which includes a lower one-storey and attic cottage and stable to the west.
The south gable wall of the cross-wing has been rebuilt in red brick at both the ground and first floors. It has two three-light casement windows, with the ground floor window set in a segmental arched opening. The lower range to the west features two plank doors on the left and right, with the right door having a lean-to porch. It also includes a three-light casement in a segmental arched opening and a single-light casement. There is one gabled dormer at eaves level with a two-light casement that has glazing bars.
The lower cottage and stable range to the west has a tall sandstone ashlar plinth on the south and west elevations. This section includes a plank door on the right, a two-light casement, and another gabled dormer at eaves level with a two-light casement. The west gable elevation features a split stable door, and the north wall of this part of the building has been rebuilt in sandstone rubble. The two-storey cross-wing has two diagonally placed square red brick ridge chimney stacks at its centre, while the cottage and stable portion has one brick ridge chimney stack.
