Description
Warwick Castle is a Grade I listed building, originally established in the early medieval period, likely before the Norman Conquest. It retains significant medieval features alongside notable 18th-century and later additions. In 1871, a fire severely damaged the Great Hall and East Wing, which were restored by architect Anthony Salvin. The castle houses an impressive collection of antiques and works of art and is recognized for its national importance.
The main block features 14th-century walls and a vaulted undercroft. Caesan's Tower and Guy's Tower, along with the Gatehouse and its Barbican, also date from the 14th century, and the curtain walls may be from this time as well. The Bear and Clarence Towers, built in the 15th century, were left unfinished in 1485 and later received battlements, likely intended to serve as a stronghold similar to that at Raglan.
Interior features from the late 17th century include remarkable plasterwork and wood carvings in the Cedar Room, created by Roger and William Hurlbut and completed in 1678. The castle underwent alterations between 1753 and 1755 by Lancelot Brown, who rebuilt the porch and stairway to the Great Hall. The porch was extended, and additional rooms were constructed beside it from 1763 to 1769 by Timothy Lightoler. The Watergate Tower was restored by Anthony Salvin between 1861 and 1863.
Warwick Castle, along with its Boundary Walls, Stables, Conservatory, Mill, and Lodge, forms a significant group of historical structures.
