Description
Stare Bridge is a late 15th-century long narrow bridge with nine arches over the River Avon, built for the community of Stoneleigh Abbey. It is constructed of red sandstone ashlar and is 10 feet wide between plain parapets, featuring a slight camber. The river flows through the three southern arches, while the remaining arches serve as flood arches. On the east side, the three southern large cutwaters extend upwards to form refuges. The other five cutwaters on the east side have been lowered to the level of the carriageway, and the parapet has been rebuilt straight. The five southern arches are pointed and of two square orders, the next two are segmental, and the last two are pointed. The west side of the bridge lacks cutwaters, and all outer arches have been rebuilt with varying sizes of buttresses added on each side. The bridge is currently disused, having been bypassed by a modern concrete structure to the east.
