Description

This is a timber-faced cottage dating back to around 1500, which was altered and extended in the late 16th century. The walls are timbered with red brick infill panels, set on sandstone foundations. The cottage has a steeply pitched thatched roof with hipped ends. An 18th-century red brick addition was later attached to the west, also thatched and with gabled ends.

The main central portion of the cottage is one storey high with an attic. It features five casement windows – one-, two- and three-light – with glazing bars. The thatch eaves rise above the dormers. To the east is a lower portion, also one storey high with an attic, with two plank doors and three ground floor casement windows with glazing bars. Two flush attic dormers contain 18th/19th-century casement windows with glazing bars, again following the thatch’s eaves line over the dormers.

The 18th-century addition is single-storey with a loft above and contains a plank door and a three-light casement window with glazing bars set within a segmental arched opening. Four brick chimney stacks are visible. Inside the central portion of the cottage are chamfered and stepped stopped beams.
