Description

Claybank Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century with later additions and alterations, including 20th-century ranges on the left and right. The building is timber-framed with painted render infill and plain-tile roofs, featuring a reddish-brown brick external stack to the left of the original range. It has a three-unit plan with later extensions that now form an L-shape, with the extension to the right partly covering the original range.

The exterior is single storey with an attic and has a three-window range. There is a single-storey, single bay to the left. The original range displays close-studded timber-framing on the ground floor, with small panels of square framing and diagonal braces on the upper stage. The off-centre entrance features a plank door within a 20th-century porch. The ground floor has wooden casement windows, with two- and three-light designs throughout. The original part has two dormers with casement windows, and there is a further three-light casement window in the gable-ended range to the right.

Inside, the original range showcases extensive exposed timber-framing. The rear wall has close-studding, which has been partly renewed, on the lower stage, while the upper stage features small panels of square framing. There is an inglenook fireplace to the left, which includes a reused bressumer beam. A jowled corner stud is located to the right. The roof structure is also exposed, featuring a tie- and collar-beam truss with queen struts and a ridge purlin.
