Description
The Old Moat House is a moated farmhouse that has been converted into a house. An inscription from the 20th century suggests that the house dates back to around 1480, with later additions and alterations, including a probable 17th-century range on the right side. The building features timber framing with painted plaster infill on the left part and a reddish-pink brick facade on the right, topped with a renewed tile roof, forming an L-plan.
The exterior consists of two storeys with an attic on the left and a single storey plus attic on the right. The entrance is located off-centre to the right, featuring a four-panel door in a moulded wood surround under an elliptical arch. The left part has a brick plinth and a jettied first floor supported by a massive bressumer beam on end studs with brackets. The ground and first floors have close-studded timber framing with angle braces. Throughout the building, there are 2- and 3-light metal casement windows with external latches.
The gable end of the right part displays an exposed queen post truss, which is interrupted by a window, and the original wall plate and purlins are visible. There are internal stacks and a right end stack, along with a brick buttress at the rear.
Inside the right part, there are square panels of timber framing on two partition walls, and it is believed that the house contains crucks, although the interior has not been fully inspected. The Old Moat House is part of a group with the Barn and Stables and is owned by the National Trust.
