Description
Flower Knott Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with additions from the 18th century, including a left end bay and a 20th-century bay to the right, along with later alterations. The cottage is timber-framed with reddish-brown brick nogging at the rear, and the front facade is covered with painted render. It features a brick stack and a plain-tile roof. The building has a T-shaped plan, originally appearing as a single cell with a cross-wing and a massive external stack at the rear where the two ranges meet.
The exterior is one-and-a-half storeys high and has three upper-stage windows. There is an off-centre plank door, and the ground floor includes 20th-century two- and three-light casement windows with lead cames. The front gable end has two full dormers with two-light casements, and the rear wall displays small square panels of timber-framing at the centre next to the stack, with larger square panels of framing to the right.
Inside, the cottage features extensive small square panels of timber-framing, some with wattle and daub infill. There is an inglenook fireplace at the rear with a bressumer beam and a tie-beam with stops. The board doors add to the character of the interior. The first floor reveals exposed timbering, including purlins and a wall plate.
