Description
Kineton Cottage, formerly known as The Thatched Cottage, is a building that consists of two cottages now converted into a single house. The cruck truss, dated to around 1475 through recent dendrochronology, indicates that part of the structure dates back to the 15th century, with the remainder from the 16th century. The building was re-fronted in the 19th century and underwent extensive restoration in 1984. It features a timber frame with a front wall made of painted brick on a blue lias plinth, and there is an attached blue lias wall to the left. Some timber framing and rubble are exposed at the rear, and the building has a thatched roof with two brick stacks located at the front of the ridge.
The exterior is a single storey plus attic, with a three-window range. The entrance, located to the right of the center, has a 20th-century plank door and a thatched hood supported by corbels. The windows feature timber lintels and 20th-century three-light small-paned casements. The roof is gabled and includes two 20th-century raking dormer windows. The left side of the building reveals an exposed cruck truss with cruck spurs and trenched principals, along with an enlarged first-floor window. The rear of the cottage includes a 20th-century brick wing.
Inside, the cottage has stone flags and exposed square framing on the cross walls and at the rear. There is a restored fireplace that includes the original domed brick bread oven. The roof features two exposed trusses with curved principals and collars, and the chimney breast is clad in a 20th-century timber frame.
