Description

Wood Lane Farmhouse is a farmhouse, with a former piggery and apple loft, dating back to approximately 1580. Later additions and alterations were made in the 17th century, along with some refacing to the south side at the west end during the late 19th or early 20th century, and restorations around 1990.

The building exhibits small, square panels of timber framing to the north and west sides, featuring arched braces and brick nogging; some close studding is visible mainly on the interior. The remaining exterior is pinkish-brown brick set upon a Wilmcote stone plinth, with a plain-tile roof. It is approximately L-shaped with outshuts to most ranges, originally comprising two house units with pig sheds at the east end, and with a taller range added to the west, having a gable end facing the front.

The main south-facing facade is single-storey with an attic, displaying a 4-window range overall. A gable-ended section projects slightly. An entrance is located at the angle, featuring a 20th-century plank door within a moulded wooden frame, sheltered by a 19th-century wooden open porch with four-centred arches. Late 20th-century windows are prevalent throughout; the ground floor has 2- and 3-light windows with glazing bars under elliptical arches, and the first floor of the gabled range has a 3-light casement also under an elliptical arch, alongside a 2-light casement between two attic gables and casements to the right range. Modillion eaves cornices are present on the right side. Steeply pitched gabled roofs are topped with outshuts having catslide roofs. An off-centre rear-ridge stack is located to the right, while a lateral stack is positioned on the left return.

The interior features extensive timber framing, with close studding to the original rear wall of the earlier range. Elsewhere, there are smaller frames with arched braces, some jowled posts to the attic, and remnants of lath and plaster in the attic. The original east room contains an inglenook fireplace with a chamfered bressumer beam and two cupboards; behind this is a bread oven and the remains of a round stack. The bressumer beam is chamfered and has run-out stops. The rear room of the west wing has an Aesthetic Movement cast-iron range by Smith, model 82258 rd 26092, with a slate surround. Plank and 2- and 6-panel doors are almost throughout, frequently with wrought-iron latches and HL-hinges. In the attic is an 18th-century 4-fielded-panel wig cupboard with HL-hinges, above a simple 18th-century fireplace. Wood Lane Farmhouse forms a group with Elmedene, Appletree Cottage and Vine Cottage.
