Description

Cherington House is a house dating from the early 18th century, with possible origins in the 17th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features a plinth, a moulded storey band, and coped gables. The roof is covered with 20th-century tiles and slates, and has moulded stone ridges and end stacks, with those on the south range designed in a Tudor Gothic style. The house has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys plus an attic.

The south facade has a six-window range of 12-pane sash windows with moulded stone surrounds, along with three gabled dormers. The west facade includes four additional 16-pane sashes and two narrow 8-pane sashes, all with stone flat arches. A six-panelled door from the 18th century is located to the centre-right, set within a mid-18th century Tudor Gothic style porch that features a cusped pilaster surround, carved spandrels, and a crested parapet, with a quatrefoil opening on each side. Above the porch is a datestone inscribed with 'B/TM/1711'. There is one gabled dormer on this facade. Extending to the west is a 19th-century four-window range of 2-light casements with stone lintels and keyblocks. At the rear of the 18th-century range is an early 19th-century polygonal ashlar extension that has 12- and 15-pane sashes on both floors. Inside, some 18th-century panelling remains at dado-rail level.
