Description
The Merrie Lion Public House, originally shown on the Ordnance Survey map as the Red Lion Public House, dates back to 1710, with additions made in the mid-19th century and late 19th to 20th centuries. The building features regular coursed ironstone with a string course and a colourwashed brick front wing. It has 20th-century tile roofs, along with brick ridge and end stacks. Originally designed as a three-unit plan, it has been extended to form a complex L-plan.
The structure stands two storeys high and has a two-window range. A late 20th-century door with a concrete lintel is located in the re-entrant angle. There is a 20th-century canted bay window with leaded lights and a slate roof, while the first floor features 19th-century three-light casements. A datestone with a cornice displays the initials TBM. A sundial at the right corner includes a painted panel with a moulded cornice and painted numerals.
The wing at right angles on the left side has no windows on the front and includes an end stack. The right return side has a two-window range with casements, some of which have glazing bars, located on the ground floor beneath cambered brick arches. The right return side of the main range facing High Street features a one-window wing with a 20th-century door and 19th-century casements. All openings are topped with wooden lintels. The interior has been altered.
