Description

The principal timber warehouse at Cox's Timber Yard in Stratford-upon-Avon dates from around 1820, with some mid-19th century renovations. It features timber-framing supported by wall posts on blue lias pads and a 20th-century steel-girder strengthening frame. The exterior is clad in weatherboarding, with some angled on the first floor for ventilation, and has a tile roof made of blue tiles arranged in a pattern of large diamonds. The building is two storeys high with an attic and consists of a five-bay range. The front is open at the ground floor and displays a sign with white-painted lettering reading "J. COX AND SON," with a similar sign on the right side stating "J. COX/ AND SON/ TIMBER MERCHANTS."

Inside, the warehouse features crossed bracing on the walls, queen post roof trusses with struts, and double purlins. Historically, it is believed to have been built around 1820 and is shown on the 1851 Ordnance Survey map. The warehouse is located near the canal, which opened in 1816 and played a significant role in the industrial development of Stratford. The firm was established in 1830 by James Cox and Edward Fordham Flower, who left the partnership to start Flower's Brewery the following year. This warehouse is the oldest family firm still operating in Stratford and serves as an important reminder of the area's industrial heritage.
