Description

Clopton Bridge and the attached former toll house is a historic bridge located in Stratford-upon-Avon, built around 1484 with repairs made in the 16th and 17th centuries. The bridge was widened, and the toll house was constructed in 1814, with a footway added in 1827. The footway was designed by J Nicolls and made by the Eagle Foundry in Birmingham. The structure is made of coursed squared stone and ashlar, featuring 14 segmental pointed arches with a platt band and plain parapets. The bridge was widened on the north side, which includes cutwaters. The cast-iron footway on the north side is cantilevered on lattice work brackets with enriched spandrels and scrolled supports for the posts, which hold panels of rails with semicircular links at the top and bottom.

The toll house, located to the south of the west end of the bridge, is 10-sided and has a platt band and crenellated parapet. Its entrance features a porch with a 4-centred head and a door made of four arched panels, while the porch is weather-boarded on the return and rear. The windows have sills and 4-centred heads, with most being blind, although some have small-paned casements with two pointed lights. The toll house also features a bell-form rainwater head. Originally, the bridge was connected to a causeway to the west. This bridge is an important example of medieval architecture and serves as a significant landscape feature. It is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
