Description
The Old Tramway Bridge is a tramway bridge that has been converted into a footbridge. It was built in 1823, with later additions to the parapets, and designed by engineer John Rastrick for the Stratford and Moreton Tramway. The bridge is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features eight elliptical arches, including a flood arch at the southeast end, supported by piers on cutwaters on both sides. The parapets are topped with ashlar coping. Originally, the bridge was intended to carry a horse tramway from Stratford Wharf to Moreton-in-Marsh, with plans for an extension to London and a branch to Shipston-on-Stour. The tramway was acquired by the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway in 1847 and was closed, except for the branch line, in 1881. Historical details are provided on a restored truck, which is preserved approximately 60 meters north of the bridge. The Old Tramway Bridge is a significant feature in the landscape surrounding the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.
