Description
Number 12, known as The Manor House, and Number 14, known as Barton Cottage, is a former manor house now divided into two residences. The building features a datestone inscribed 'JOHN PAYTON ANNO DOMINI 1663' and has an 18th century to early 19th century wing on the right. It is constructed of lias ashlar with alternating broad and narrow courses, and limestone dressings. The left gable is made of colour-washed 19th century brick, while the wing is of red brick with a brick dentil cornice. The roof is tiled, with stone slates on the left cross-wing, and there are brick chimneys at the internal and end positions. The structure is L-shaped with a cross wing on the left and a coped cross gable on the right. It has two storeys and an attic, with a five-window range and a two-window wing.
The entrance to The Manor House features a 17th century studded door with traces of an incised lozenge pattern, set in a moulded wood surround with a later overlight above the lintel and cement dressings. Barton Cottage has its entrance next to the cross-wing, featuring a 19th century four-panelled half-glazed door with a moulded wood surround and a late 20th century porch made of coursed lias with a tile roof. The building includes stone mullioned windows with two and three lights, complete with hood moulds. The cross-wing has four-light windows on the ground floor with a king mullion, and a 19th century attic casement under a segmental arch. The left return side has two blocked two-light windows on the first floor, and the rear wing shows some exposed close studding with later brick infill.
Inside, Barton Cottage retains some exposed framing, and in the kitchen, there is a large open fireplace, now partially blocked, featuring a broad stop-chamfered bressumer.
