Description
The building is a barn and stable, located approximately 20 meters northeast of Palmer's Farmhouse. It dates from the 17th century, with most of it constructed in the 18th century; the barn porch may be a later addition. The restored timber-framed end wall features jowled posts and tension braces, with brick infill. The rest of the structure is made of regular coursed lias and has a simple cornice. The porch has a brick gable with a string course and an old tile roof. The building is L-shaped, consisting of a barn with five bays and a three-bay wing on the left that includes the porch, while the cowhouse or stable has one bay. The barn features doors with segmental brick arches at the front, rear, and porch. The stable door on the right has a grille made of diagonally-set square wooden uprights above it and a wooden lintel. Timber rainwater goods are present. The rear of the wing has barn doors with a wooden lintel and a leaded-light casement. Inside, there is a timber-framed partition between the barn and the cowhouse or stable, which includes jowled posts and diagonal braces, some whitewashed brick infill, and weatherboarding in the upper part. The remainder of the building has queen strut roofs with through purlins, and there is a small addition at the rear of the cowhouse. This structure is part of an interesting group that includes Mary Arden's House, a dovecote, and other farm buildings.
